Deer twisted by the road.

Since they had toes,
accruing like layers of dust forming a stone,
a sedimentary process
of experience compressed by time
into the genes.

Solid, inflexible, inexorable.
Change so gradual stars die
before a decision is made.

No match for the industrial age,
accretions that frustrate leopards
falter in the headlights.
Instincts fail, signals stutter.

Deer twisted by the road.
