Wandering Souls-8

October 6, 2013

He discovered there are people who take over your life; plan it, arrange it, very nearly live it for you.  A social worker named Dennis took Dewey’s life in hand, the new life he’d have to live now; he put the little house Dewey lived in, that he’d inherited from his grandmother, on the market – the opinion was that Dewey’s days of independent living were over – and had Dewey’s belongings, the little there was, packed into a storage unit.
Dewey didn’t choose things now, he was informed.  Dennis informed him that he’d be moving into an assisted living
facility, the current term for a nursing home.  The money made by selling his grandmother’s house would go to the nursing home – he’d get a monthly allowance for pocket money – and when that was gone the state would pay the home and Dewey would be on social security disability.  Dewey asked Dennis if he made these decisions and Dennis told him he reported to a committee and the committee decided.
